There is only one system of Magickal correspondences called English Qaballa – with that particular spelling – the alphabetical order and value revealed in the manuscript of Liber AL vel Legis on page 16 of the third chapter.
I have not come across any explanation for the presence of this grid in Crowley’s notebook. It was left blank save for letters along the top and number down the left hand side, and most likely drawn before the writing of the third chapter occurred. The full Magickal Alphabet is as follows
A=1 L=2 W=3 H=4 S=5 D=6 O=7 Z=8 K=9 V=10 G=11 R=12 C=13 N=14 Y=15 J=16 U=17 F=18 Q=19 B=20 M=21 X=22 I=23 T=24 E=25 P=26
This English Qaballa has been something of an elephant in the Western Occult room since its discovery by James Lees in November 1976. The very fact of its existence means that English is become a Magickal language: the correspondences work: the Book of the Law is a Holy Book: the Intelligence which dictated it had knowledge of every system ever devised by Man (including some that were hardly thought of in 1904) and of every possible numerological combination of the letters and words of the text.
But a Qaballa in English? – what’s the point? The Hebrew Kabbalah is all we need, it works…
Well, yes, but.
A lot has happened since.
Human spirituality is evolving, our interpretation of reality is changing, we have ideas and technologies unimaginable to the revolutionaries of the Great Western Revival, we have three more planets operating in our collective consciousness than were known to the medieval mages, and most likely the solar system is not where it was 26,000 years ago.
And, not to put too fine a point on it, in the 21st century, the Hebrew God just ain’t making it, man.
“Strike another match, go start anew…”
